Healthatoz healthatoz Atoz ency typhoid fever Typhoid fever Definition Typhoid fever is a severe infection caused by a bacterium, Salmonella typhi. S. typhi is in the same family of bacteria as the type spread by chicken and eggs, commonly known as "salmonella poisoning, " or food poisoning. S. typhi bacteria do not have vomiting and diarrhea as the most prominent symptoms of their presence in humans. Instead, persistently high fever is the hallmark of S. typhi infection. Description S. typhi bacteria are passed into the stool and urine of infected patients. They may continue to be present in the stool of asymptomatic carriers, who are persons who have recovered from the symptoms of the disease but continue to carry the bacteria. This carrier state occurs in about 3% of all individuals recovered from typhoid fever. Typhoid fever is passed from person to person through poor hygiene, such as incomplete or no hand washing after using the toilet. Persons who are carriers of the disease and who handle food can be the source of epidemic spread of typhoid. One such individual gave her name to the expression "Typhoid Mary, " a name given to someone whom others avoid. Typhoid fever is a particularly difficult problem in parts of the world with poor sanitation practices. In the United States, most patients who contract typhoid fever have recently returned from travel to another country where typhoid is much more common, including Mexico, Peru, Chile, India, and Pakistan. Causes and symptoms S. typhi must be ingested to cause disease. Transmission often occurs when a person in the carrier state does not and bupropion.

Public trust whatever the correct settlement betamethasone the rise drug. Intra-articular microcrystalline corticosteroid injections have been used for half a century as a simple, palliative and relatively safe therapeutic adjunct in non-septic local joint inflammation w1x. As intra-articular injection became widely used, anecdotes of post-injection steroid flares in the injected joints were reported. In 1964, a sterile inflammatory reaction was described with hydrocortisone, cortisone and dexamethasone crystals in normal joints w2x. In 1970, Hollander w3x reported his 20-yr experience with depot corticosteroids, noting postinjection flares in 1 to 2% his patients. Since then new corticosteroid preparations have been developed containing methylprednisone, prednisolone, triamcinolone and behamethasone crystals. Increased white blood cell counts in the synovial fluid have still been observed after injections with triamcinoline acetate and prednisolone preparations, and their crystals have been demonstrated by polarized light and electron microscopy to be present intracellularly in synovial fluid 24 h and 1 week after injection w4x. Isolated reports of an immediate exacerbation or inflammation from intra-articular triamcinolone hexacetonide injection have been published from time to time w5x. Osteonecrosis, possibly secondary to repeated local corticosteroid injections with triamcinolone hexacetonide, has been reported in at least three cases involving the femoral head, the distal femur and proximal tibia w6, 7x. Also, regional epiphyseal osteonecrosis has been reported in children treated with intra-articular triamcinolone hexacetonide w8x. A study of pain relief in the rheumatoid knee after injection of hydrocortisone succinate and triamcinolone hexacetonide or acetonide did not report any flares and showed better results with triamcinolone hexacetonide w9x. An American College of Rheumatology survey carried out in 1994 showed little consensus among rheumatologists concerning the administration of intra-articular corticosteroids w10x. The reasons given for choosing a specific corticosteroid were primarily availability and habit. Considering the sparse information on intra-articular corticosteroid preparations and their common use in the rheumatology clinic we have started studies to attempt to determine if there is one corticosteroid superior to others in various settings with regard to either efficacy and isoptin.
